temporary torment

i met him where the moon hung low,

with teeth that tasted like gin

he had a way of standing close

like trouble asking to come in

i knew he’d leave before he stayed

i knew the ending from the start

but still i let him learn my name

and lay his hands around my heart

oh, temporary man

you came in like a curse

i held you like a loaded gun

and prayed it wouldn’t hurt

you talked like you were passing through

but kissed me like you’d changed your mind

i wore your leaving on my mouth

before you ever said goodbye

now every song sounds like a grave

every streetlight feels too dim

i hate the way i miss your face

when i should be mad at him

oh, temporary man

you came in like a curse

i held you like a loaded gun

and prayed it wouldn’t hurt

and if i’m honest, i could tell

you weren’t mine to keep

but damn, you dug a shallow grave

and left me there to sleep

im over it
